4 Reasons your Decal isn't Sticking

Surface Cleanliness/Preparation:

Even the best vinyl can struggle to adhere when the trailer surface has not been properly prepared. Dirt, dust, grease, and other contaminants can create a barrier between the adhesive and the trailer surface, preventing it from forming a strong bond. A dirty trailer, as well as dirt and oil from your hands, can cause the adhesive to bond to the contamination instead of directly to the paint, allowing the decal to lift or peel away from the surface.

Avoid touching the adhesive whenever possible and thoroughly cleaning the application area with 91% isopropyl alcohol before installation.

Paint/Powder Residue:

The paint and coating on the trailer can also affect how a decal adheres. As strange as it sounds, some powder-coat colors, especially gray and tan, can exude a wax-like residue as they cure. This residue can prevent decals from bonding properly.

Before applying a decal, the residue needs to be removed either chemically with 91% isopropyl alcohol or physically with a torch or heat gun.

Ink Interaction:

The relationship between ink and adhesive begins during the printing process and can affect how a decal performs after installation. Ink and adhesive are chemical materials, and as the ink is printed onto the vinyl, the two materials can interact. In some cases, this interaction can contribute to edge retraction or reduced adhesion, particularly when ink is printed all the way to the edge of the decal.

Leaving a small border between the printed area and the edge can help minimize this interaction and provide a better surface for the adhesive to bond.

Tack Level:

Some applications are temporary and require a lower-tack adhesive, while more demanding or permanent applications require a higher-grip adhesive. The texture of the surface also affects the level of adhesive grip needed. Highly textured surfaces, such as diamond plate, may require a stronger-grip adhesive to achieve proper contact and adhesion.

Talk with your vinyl supplier about the surface and conditions where you will be applying the decals so they can recommend the material and adhesive best suited for the application.
